It’s funny that the most talked about watch is a Casio G-SHOCK, but it comes as no surprise when you learn it’s a collaboration with Blues phenom John Mayer. While most know John for his musical talents and performances with the legendary Grateful Dead, John is a watch-collecting guru and has one of the largest collections of rare watches from Rolex to Patek Philippe. So why would John do a Casio G-SHOCK? The man simply loves watches.

While it may look like a regular 6900 in pastel blue, this limited edition is extraordinary. The 6900-PT1 is the third John Mayer limited edition, the first two being the 6900 and the 6900-PT80; each design was inspired by a Casio keyboard that John grew up using to create music when he was a child. The original 6900 LE took the aesthetics from a Casio SK-5 sampling keyboard, the 6900-PT80 from the mid-1980s Casio PT80 keyboard and the new 6900 PT1 from the Casio PT1 keyboard. Each variation featured unique colours from your standard G-SHOCK 6900, but the new PT1 takes the cake for me.

The G-Shock x Hodinkee x John Mayer ref. 6900 PT1 implements a matte pastel blue case, strap, and pastel coral, teal and blue accent colours–the same as the Casio PT1 keyboard. While there is a lot of colour in this version compared to the previous versions, there is still a hint of subtlety, creating a more fun and light-hearted version of the 6900. Will this watch be for everyone? No. However, it’s incredible to see Casio taking on a new venture when collaborating with John to create successful editions of an already legendary digital watch.

How to buy the perfect wristwatch

Obviously, there’s no such thing as a perfect wristwatch. Each watch brand has quirks, differences, and some unique design languages that make us scratch our heads, but some people adore them no matter what. If you’re new to the watch scene, let me guide you toward buying your perfect watch.

When getting into watch collecting, I notice people buy watches for the wrong reasons. While buying for investment or status is fine, I prefer to buy a watch for sentimental reasons or as a tool to create memories. In the long run, a watch can be a wearable time capsule that reminds us of days gone by or a trip that meant the world to us. Having sentimentality attached to a watch makes it unique.

On top of that, many buy watches to scratch a particular itch, only to buy more because that watch didn’t satisfy their “craving.” When purchasing a watch, take the time to explore every nook and cranny of this fantastic hobby, try on different things, and buy whatever makes you happy. People will always recommend what you should or shouldn’t buy, but remember, it’s your world to explore and your money. Buy the watches that make you feel good and happy and bring a smile to your face every time you look at your wrist.

Watch collecting is meant to be a fun and exciting experience that opens doors to meeting new and interesting people. If you’re not having fun with it, you’re doing it wrong. The watch world is vast, with many styles, aesthetics and price ranges for any budget. Find what you love and go from there. Enjoy every second, minute and hour, and make some memories.

The Social Corner - @watchdaddy1

It's time for another Social Corner! I take the time to pick one member of the online watch fam and talk about the awesome content they take the time to create! Today I’m talking about a good friend, one of my first friends on the Instagram watch community, and a guy with one of the greatest collections I’ve ever seen. I’m talking about my friend William or @watchdaddy1.

If I took the time to explain all the watches Will has in his collection, there would be multiple paragraphs of me raving about how beautiful each one is. The man has phenomenal taste in modern and vintage watches, straps and accessories, and much more. If you want an Instagram profile to scroll endlessly and look at one of the most offensively beautiful collections on the platform, please check out Will’s profile via @watchdaddy1.

Thank you for reading luxxee's weekly wrap-up and don't forget to come back next week to see what’s happening in the watch world!
